Vahe and Colleen’s surprise proposal: planned from across the world, felt in every frame

By Carolina Morgan | Sydney Proposal Photographer

As a Sydney proposal photographer, I have been part of some beautifully planned moments. But when someone reaches out from the other side of the world to arrange a surprise proposal, I know the story is going to be something special.

That is exactly what Vahe did.

Flying in secretly from Los Angeles while his girlfriend Colleen was in Sydney visiting her family, he planned everything from thousands of kilometres away. The location. The timing. The outfits. The exact spot where he would get down on one knee.

The one thing neither of us planned for? The rain.

And honestly, it made the whole story even better.

Planning a Surprise Proposal at the Sydney Opera House

Vahe knew exactly what he wanted: the most iconic backdrop in the country, but with a sense of privacy. No big crowds. No distractions. Just the two of them and the moment.

The day before the proposal, we scouted the location together. As a Sydney proposal photographer who knows these spots well, I wanted to find a corner of the Opera House that felt both meaningful and intimate, somewhere the moment could unfold without feeling like a performance for passing tourists.

We found it. A quiet section of the Opera House stairs with the harbour stretching out behind them and the city softly framing the moment.

It was perfect. Even before the rain arrived.

The Moment Colleen Saw Him Standing There

When the day came, everything happened exactly as planned, except for the weather.

The rain came down softly as Colleen approached, completely unaware of what was waiting for her. And then she saw him.

Her face said everything.

That is the thing about genuine surprise proposals: the reaction cannot be rehearsed, planned, or directed. It simply happens. And as a proposal photographer in Sydney, those are the frames I live for. The sharp intake of breath. The hands flying to the face. The laugh that turns into tears before anyone even realises it has happened.

Vahe got down on one knee in the rain, and Colleen said yes.

After the Yes: Wandering the Harbour Together

Once the moment had settled, we wandered through the Opera House precinct together, letting the excitement, the relief, and the pure joy of it all wash over them.

Rain and all, they were completely in their own world. Laughing. Holding each other. Looking out at the harbour with that particular glow that comes from knowing your life just changed for the better.

These are the photographs that tell the full story. Not just the moment of the proposal itself, but everything that follows it. The unguarded smiles. The quiet closeness. The feeling of two people stepping into something new together.

Why Sydney Is One of the Most Beautiful Places in the World to Propose

The Sydney Opera House is iconic for a reason. But it is just the beginning of what this city offers for proposal photography.

From the quiet harbour foreshore to hidden laneways in The Rocks, from clifftop views in the Eastern Suburbs to the golden light of Kirribilli across the water, Sydney has an extraordinary range of locations that feel both romantic and completely personal.

As a Sydney proposal photographer, my job is to help you find the spot that feels right for your story, scout it in advance, and be in exactly the right position when the moment happens. So that all you have to do is show up and feel it.
